Broadcasting and television are now entering the era of High Definition (HD) – a transition as profound as the first introduction of television and the subsequent transition from black-and-white to colour television.
High-definition television (or HDTV, or just HD) refers to video having resolution substantially higher than traditional television systems.
High-definition television (or HDTV, or just HD) refers to video having resolution substantially higher than traditional television systems.
Four HDTV production systems are recognised for use in Europe:
- System 1 (S1) with 1280 horizontal samples and 720 active lines in progressive scan with a frame rate of 50 Hz, 16:9 aspect ratio. Abbreviated 720p/50.
- System 2 (S2) with 1920 horizontal samples and 1080 active lines in interlaced scan with a frame rate of 25 Hz, 16:9 aspect ratio. Abbreviated 1080i/25.
- System 3 (S3) with 1920 horizontal samples and 1080 active lines in progressive scan and a frame rate of 25 Hz, 16:9 aspect ratio. Abbreviated 1080p/25.
- System 4 (S4) with 1920 horizontal samples and 1080 active lines in progressive scan at a frame rate of 50 Hz, 16:9 aspect ratio. Abbreviated 1080p/50.
High definition, as we know it today, has always been a widescreen 16:9 (1.78:1) format, not quite going to the extremes of the film industry with ratios of 1.85:1 up to 2.35:1, but a reasonable compromise
between the needs of television and movies. In fact DVD has been one of the motivations for the television transition to widescreen. Several European countries have also used the introduction of digital standard-definition services to instigate this change.
A great way to get into high-definition entertainment, the affordable 32-inch LG 32LD350 LCD HDTV offers a 720p HD resolution, multiple AV Modes to optimize the picture depending on what you're watching (Cinema, Sports, or Games), and a 50,000:1 contrast ratio for excellent rendering of colors and deep blacks. Other features include a 4ms (millisecond) response time, stereo speakers with 14 watts of power and Dolby Digital decoding, and three HDMI inputs.
